No-Mode Data Sets

All Calculators

A dataset has no mode when no value occurs more often than the others. It is a normal result, not an error, and examiners accept it as long as you say so clearly.

When it happens

  • Every value appears exactly once, such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
  • Every value appears the same number of times and each appears once after deduplication.

What to write

Write “There is no mode” or “The dataset has no mode”. Both are correct. Writing a value that merely happens to be in the list is not: for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 the mode is not 1, because 1 is no more frequent than anything else.

How it differs from a tie

Data Answer
1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3 Modes 1, 2 and 3: multimodal, because each ties on the highest count of 2
1, 2, 3 No mode, because nothing repeats
7, 7, 7 Mode 7, and the mean and median are also 7

Why it matters for the other measures

A dataset with no mode can still have a perfectly good mean and median. For 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 the mean is 3 and the median is 3, and the fact that there is no mode tells you the values are all distinct, which is information about the data rather than a gap in it.

Working practice

Enter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 into the calculator and watch the mode card read “No mode” while the frequency table shows a count of one against every value. Seeing both at once is the fastest way to make the idea stick.
