What is the range?
The range is the difference between the biggest number and the smallest number in a list. It tells you how spread out the numbers are.
Range = largest value − smallest value
Range example
For 3, 5, 5, 7, 10 the largest number is 10 and the smallest is 3, so the range is 10 − 3 = 7. With negative numbers, take care with the signs: for −5, −10, 3, 7 the range is 7 − (−10) = 17.
How to find the range with the calculator
- Type or paste your numbers into the box.
- Press the calculate button.
- Read the range in the results. The calculator also shows the mean, median and mode, with the steps.
A small range means the numbers are close together. A big range means they are far apart. One very big or very small number can change the range a lot, so also look at the median. The mean, median, mode and range guide explains all four measures in simple words.
